Key takeaways
- Class-leading PCIe 4.0 performance for gaming and everyday tasks
- Runs efficiently and cool thanks to Samsung’s tuned controller
- Single-sided design fits laptops, handhelds, and tight desktop slots
- Excellent Magician software for monitoring and management
The Samsung SSD 990 PRO 4TB is a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive in the standard M.2 2280 form factor, rated for up to 7,450 MB/s reads. It is Samsung’s top-tier Gen 4 SSD, built for people who want a large, fast, reliable boot and game drive without moving to the newer, hotter, more expensive Gen 5 generation.
This 4TB model is aimed at gamers with sprawling libraries, content creators juggling large video and photo projects, and anyone who wants to consolidate storage onto one high-capacity drive. If you only need a modest boot drive, a smaller capacity makes more sense, and cutting-edge users chasing peak sequential speed will look at Gen 5, but for mainstream high-capacity performance the 990 PRO remains a benchmark.

Watch: Samsung 990 PRO 4TB Review — Video Review
Design & Build
This is a single-sided M.2 2280 drive, which helps it fit tight spaces like laptops and handhelds as well as standard desktop slots. The version reviewed here ships without a heatsink, relying on your motherboard’s M.2 cooler, and Samsung’s controller and firmware are tuned for efficiency, so it runs cooler than many rivals at this speed. There is also a heatsink variant if your board lacks its own cooling, and Samsung Magician software adds health monitoring and drive management. As a PCIe 4.0 drive it works in any Gen 4 or Gen 5 M.2 slot, and it is backward compatible with Gen 3 at reduced speed.
Performance
In everyday use the 990 PRO is as fast as a Gen 4 drive gets: game levels load quickly, large file transfers move briskly, and the drive’s strong random performance keeps the whole system feeling snappy, which matters more day to day than peak sequential numbers. For gaming, creative work, and general productivity, it delivers a premium experience that few Gen 4 drives beat.
The honest limitations are about positioning. Its 7,450 MB/s ceiling is now well behind Gen 5 drives that push double those figures, so if raw sequential throughput is your goal, this is not the fastest option available. Like most high-capacity TLC drives, sustained writes will slow once the fast cache is exhausted during very large transfers, and this top-tier drive carries a price premium over value-oriented alternatives that most users will never notice in real workloads.
Pros & Cons
- Class-leading PCIe 4.0 performance for gaming and everyday tasks
- Runs efficiently and cool thanks to Samsung’s tuned controller
- Single-sided design fits laptops, handhelds, and tight desktop slots
- Excellent Magician software for monitoring and management
- Gen 5 drives now offer far higher sequential speeds
- Sustained write speed drops on very large transfers once cache fills
- Priced above budget high-capacity alternatives
Alternatives to Consider
If you want the fastest possible drive and your board supports it, the Samsung SSD 9100 PRO 4TB is Samsung’s Gen 5 successor with roughly double the sequential speed, and the WD_Black SN8100 4TB is a strong competing Gen 5 option. For built-in cooling on a board without an M.2 heatsink, the Samsung SSD 990 PRO with Heatsink 4TB is the same drive with a low-profile heatsink attached.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 990 PRO fast enough for gaming?
Yes. It is among the fastest PCIe 4.0 drives and loads games quickly. For gaming specifically, Gen 5 offers little real-world benefit today, so the 990 PRO remains an excellent choice.
Do I need the heatsink version?
Only if your motherboard does not include an M.2 heatsink. If your board already has cooling, the bare drive reviewed here is fine; otherwise choose the heatsink variant.
Will it work in a PCIe 5.0 slot?
Yes. As a Gen 4 drive it runs in Gen 5 and Gen 4 slots at full speed, and in Gen 3 slots at reduced speed, so it is broadly compatible.
Should I buy this or a Gen 5 SSD?
If you want maximum sequential throughput for heavy file work, consider Gen 5. For gaming and general use, the 990 PRO delivers a premium experience at lower cost and heat.
Verdict
The Samsung 990 PRO 4TB remains one of the best PCIe 4.0 SSDs you can buy: fast where it counts, efficient, roomy, and backed by great software. It is no longer the speed champion now that Gen 5 exists, and it commands a premium, but for the large majority of gamers and creators who do not need Gen 5’s headline numbers, it is a dependable, high-capacity drive that is easy to recommend.
